Buskers in Adelaide

Busking in Rundle Mall

Rundle Mall is the central shopping street in Adelaide. For many years now it has been closed to vehicular traffic, and paved as a pedestrian mall. People are allowed to busk in the mall, but must buy a busking permit. About twenty years ago, my daughter was involved in a circus for children (Cirkids) and wanted to travel to Victoria for a one week course with the Flying Fruit Flies. She bought a busker's permit for 50 cents a day, and busked for several weeks of her holidays and earned a nice tidy sum of a few hundred dollars by riding her unicycle and juggling. Since then they have put the price up to $5 a day, but the buskers have to move every 30 minutes. The idea of that is that if they are terrible, no one shopkeeper has to tolerate a bad, on-going performance.

Buskers during the Fringe Festival

The Fringe Festival that is currently on from 26th February to 14th March, intersected by Womadelaide from 5th to 8th March, attracts international performing artists. This gives locals (especially those of us who work in the Mall) a real treat with the standard of busking rocketing sky high, so much so that I leave the office with a fist-full of dollars to spread around. Today I took my trusty camera to lunch with me to spot some talent.

One International Visitor

This fellow was too busy to talk to me, but was happy to take my donation for a short photo session. He was from Switzerland, and thought he would move on to Sydney and Melbourne when the festival was over, but said that so far he had enjoyed the opening parade and fireworks. As you can hear, his music is very melodious.

An amazing one-man-band

From Queensland, Australia, I discovered this amazing one-man-band. His CD's were selling like hotcakes and I really wanted to get one, but my fistful of coins wasn't going to stretch quite that far! Have a look at the video and see for yourself the talent that he blessed my lunch hour with!

The circus has come to town

Many circuses have turned up in town - most of them are animal free zones which makes it more demanding for the performers. These young performers are hoping for a circus career. In Victoria, it is possible to undertake university study in circus performing.

Popular before he starts!

This busker was just setting up when I passed by, and yet a crowd had begun to gather. His act was to hide something under three cups and have the audience guess which cup it was under. Ten minutes later when I came back to capture the action, the crowd was so large that I couldn't even see him through the ten-deep crowd, let alone video the action. Next time, I'll take a front row and wait patiently!

Another great hub, must say Fremantle buskers are great and you don't have to have a permit. My little fella (11) rakes in the cash with his B-Boy moves.

I live in Vancouver, Canada and we have a large number of buskers over the spring and summer months. I always marvel at how much cash they rake in!

Yes, when these "professional" buskers come to town they really rake it in. The usual ones do fairly well I think. Thanks for leaving your comments on a gramarye hub!

Must get to the side of the planet so time soon.

In NY & SF Busks are in every place from park to subway cars.

Amazing acrobatic talent in a moving subway car is something to see.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comments. Its funny I've been to both NY and SF but cannot recall seeing any buskers at all.

we don't call them buskers here as much as transients.

Mostly in Union Square station and on the A or 6 train.

Very entertaining people. My favorites are the Do-wop trio and literally an entire brass sextet, just awesome :)

How much is a busking permit for an adult in Rundle Mall?

Sue, I'm not exactly sure as they had a period of increases but my guess is about $5 to $10.

Hi,

I play an instrument called a Chapman Stick in Adelaide all year round (weather permitting). We pay $23 for a monthly permit, although you can get a day permit for about $3. By comparison, permits are $40/year in Sydney and FREE in Melbourne! I've lived in Europe and California, and the standard of busking is generally high in Adelaide. It's not an easy place to make a living from May-October though, so most of the professionals go interstate or overseas and come back before Christmas. Catch you in the mall!

Thanks for the info. I am planning to come to Adelaide for a few days in mid-December and do some busking. I am a professional operatic tenor and have found busking a great way to earn some money when travelling around. I was born in Elizabeth but left when I was a baby, so am interested to have a look around. Any advice on cheap but ok places to stay?

Thanks for your comment, Tenor Paul. Your question, "cheap but OK" can vary a lot. I suggest you look at http://www.discoveraustralia.com.au/ for some ideas. Once you identify some places, I may be able to comment about location etc, but OK varies a lot, and as I have not been inside may not be able to comment very wisely.
