Essay writing and topic sentences
68Topic sentences and structure
The key to good essay writing is structure. Structure is achieved by use of topic sentences. This means that the introduction says what will be written in the essay. Every paragraph uses the first sentence to say what the paragraph will say. The conclusion says what the essay said. In a nutshell, that is what structure is.
Below I will write a short essay demonstrating this idea.
The title of my essay is:
Homework Distractions.
Introduction
When trying to do homework, many students are prone to distractions. There are three main distractions that will be discussed in this essay. Firstly mass media in the form of television, music and computers. The second distraction is the lack of organised space which includes a desk area and access to books. The third distraction is the need for part time work. By understanding the distractions, students will be able to overcome their distractions.
Mass Media
There are three types of mass media that distract students, namely television, music and computers. Television has distracted students for the last 50 years, but more recently teenagers like to have television in their bedrooms. This causes great distractions to study. It is important not to study with the television on, so switch it off until your homework is finished. Music is a newer distraction because most music is listened to through headphones. Therefore, parents no longer yell at teenagers to turn down the music. It's a bit like television. Turn it off until your homework is finished. Finally, computers are the newest distraction. They are great for research but leave the social networking until your homework is finished. If you can stay away from mass media while you study you will have better concentration.
Organised Space
To study efficiently, you need an organised desk where you have access to everything you need while studying. A desk may seem a little old fashioned to a multitasking teenager who likes to study while laying on the bed with the television on, i-pod glued to the ears, and checking facebook at the same time. This is a huge distraction. If you are serious about improving your study, get a desk away from all the temptations, equip it with pens, rulers, paper and glue, and other important things like books to study from and a (non-online) dictionary. Make your desk your homework place where people are not allowed to distract you.
Part time work
Part time work can really eat up your study time, so here are some things to think about. Firstly, is it really important to have a job? If it is just for a bit of pocket money, fine, but if you are working more than 10 hours a week, you really should think about your need for money. When you are well educated, your job chances improve along with the salary. If you continue working for peanuts, you may just end up there for the rest of your life. Study will pay off in the long term.
Conclusion
This essay has considered how the distractions of mass media, space and part time work can distract students from their study. It has suggested turning off mass media until homework is finished. Organize a desk to study at where you will have all your books and will not be distracted. Finally think about the long term gains of study over part time jobs. Now that you are aware of your distractions, I wish you success in overcoming them to be a successful student.

Great hub on writing essays.
A good reminder for us all on the proper way to write essays.
This is a good teaching hub, and should be viewed by teens. For that matter, I need to complete my certification CEUs and found your advice in the example article to be true as well. It is hard to focus and learn, checking in with hubpages or facebook every few minutes. Thanks for a helpful hub. (: v
Ah - so well outlined and illustrated, gramarye. I remember that from school. Now I wonder how I got it so "lost in the shuffle" at times!! LOL I'll be rereading this one more than once and thank you for writing it and for writing it to so perfectly demonstrate the lessons!

I always tell my students and friends who are students to go to the Internet when they get stuck. You've provided a wonderful destination for an issue that many struggle with at first.
Thank you!
Are you a teacher gramarye? Your essay brings back memories of my English teachers in high school. This is a very good example of what I was taught. I just wish I could figure out some brilliant opening sentences all the time.
I seem to write about things other than teaching how to write. I have had my fill with teaching how to write for 40 years as an elementary grades teacher. With few of your hubs that I read, I yearn again for those days. You write wonderfully!
Topic sentences are good for articles but are they useful in mystery novels?
gramarye
It sure did, thanks.
I liked this hub. It discloses a practical way to utilize topics down to the paragraph level. Every writer indicates a topic for his/her article by including a title. Some writers label section topics. But paragraph topics usually must be ascertained by the reader, after reading the paragraph in its entirety. A carefully selected leading sentence will relieve the reader of that chore. It will also aid the writer in keeping the paragraph confined to a single topic.
Very nice article. It inspires me to start writing for Hubpages. You are my inspiration. Thanks a lot and more power.
I will be printing this hub and sticking it above my son's desk! It is a great no nonsense guide for teenagers. Thanks for your hub, it means I do not have to lecture my son to do his homework now!
Great information I found. Thanks for the ideas.

Excellent. I had to do a post about writing essays a few weeks ago on my blog tour with Women On Writing (WOW)and it was difficult to do. My book is a series of essays on my first year as a widow. That was the easy part (writing the book). The hard part was explaining how I wrote in essay form. Wish I had this info handy! Very well done. Glad I am a follower. I think I am going to enjoy your hubs!
