Study Skills

To learn English with no teacher, you will have to work hard. Here are my ideas:

  1. Make a time every day - even if it is only 30 minutes
  2. Think while you are studying
  3. Speak out loud, even if you are by yourself

Come back because I will add more ideas here to help you.

Ready to start?

If you are ready to start to learn English with no teacher, start here:

You should have bought or borrowed a book about English

Begin with unit 1.

Read & translate the instructions if they are in English.

Do the exercises slowly and be thinking hard about what you are learning.

If it says "speak to a partner" pretend you are talking to another person, do it out loud.

If you can, record your speaking and listen to it.

At the end of the unit, check your answers.

NOW, THIS IS IMPORTANT if you want to learn English with no teacher

Write down all the new words on paper about 5cm square

Look the word up in your dictionary and write the meaning on the back of the paper

Clip all the papers together, and carry them with you all the time. Look at them often and:

  1. Look at one word and say it out loud.
  2. Look away and spell the word.
  3. Look back and check your spelling.

I have learned many languages without a teacher only using Pimsleur lessons. You do have to be pretty good in Englihs to start out though.

Sincerely, I.B.

Interesting hub. One of my goals is to go back to studying German (I took two courses in undergraduate school), and attempt to learn Spainish and French. I have a friend from Paris who lives down the street, and finding people who speak Spainish should be easy in America.

Great tips! I used to be pretty fluent in Spanish, but I've forgotten much of it.

The best way to learn a foreign language is to study for a couple months using a good English book, and then after you have the basics down just go out and practice speaking with English speakers every day. It may seem scary at first, but within a few months you'll be understanding and almost speaking fluently.
