Shih Tzu Puppies - unexpected decision
When our Shih Tzu died 8 weeks ago, we decided to be pet free for a while. However, a couple of weeks ago we met a couple at the pub with an 18 month old Shih Tzu who was a really lovely dog.
That seemed to change the tide for my husband who started looking at puppies in the pet shops. That weekend on Sunday we looked in the paper, but it was too late, and all the puppies were sold.
On Friday night, we again looked in the pet shops and were very taken by two puppies, but my husband had decided that he wanted pure bred Shih Tzus, not crossed.
So last weekend, we got up early to look in the Saturday paper, and one person had advertised pure bred Shih Tzus and we phoned him. He said he was from the country and would bring the two males for us to look at on Sunday afternoon. We were very excited. There was no doubt we would buy one, and the thought of two was already brewing!
Puppy Room
Preparing for the puppies
Because I was fairly sure we would get a puppy, I started making mental preparations.
I'm very lucky to have a "spare" bathroom off my kitchen area where all the floors are tiled. Therefore, I thought this would make a perfect puppy room.
As the pictures show, I got a nice cushion for their bed and wrapped an old towel around it. Because the tiles are very cold, I also put a thick piece of cardboard underneath the cushion to insulate the bed from the cold tiles.
At the moment, our nights go down to about 3 degrees so I decided to put the oil heater next to their bed so they would have some ambient warmth.
The heater also served to section off the bed area from their eating area, so that worked out very well.
The other photo shows how I decided to use the shower alcove for their toilet. I put newspaper on the floor, and it is really easy to clean when needed by using the shower.
This arrangement would not suit everyone because they use their shower, so I guess I'm fairly lucky to have the spare bathroom.
Meet Oscar
Oscar
Oscar was our first choice because of his size, face and intellect. By that I mean that he was able to follow a finger with his eye, and was the one who went exploring his new surroundings. When a ball was offered to him, he knew how to play with it and even picked it up in his mouth, surprising all of us.
Deefa
Deefa was very obviously the runt of the litter, being only about half of Oscar's size. He didn't follow a finger, and was extremely wobbly on his little legs.
We really loved his colors and patches, and it was clear by the way he smooched up to his brother that he would be very lonely without him.
It was obvious by now that we would take them both!
24 hours later!
It's now been 24 hours since the breeder followed us to the ATM for his money, and it hasn't been too bad.
Both nights they have been in the puppy room from about 10pm to 9am without a sound! I think the decision to have the pair was good because they have company and warmth with each other.
Deefa always uses the paper, and Oscar never does. Oscar is the one to cry and Deefa never does. Oscar demands attention, Deefa just curls up next to me. Oscar plays, Deefa follows him around. Deefa is just a little bit special.
Grand daughter meets the Shih Tzu puppies
What's next?
Well, I really hope to train both of the Shih Tzu puppies just a bit beyond the basics, and will be happy if I can get "roll over". Most of all, I hope to train my husband to not feed them at the table as he did with our last dog. Just love those Shih Tzu puppies!

Yay for Defer and Oscar! They're adorable! My puppy, Xena is now quiet in the night. Tomorrow, we're bringing home her sister... but her sister won't be staying with us. She'll be heading over to the neighbour's. Anyway, great Hub. I look forward to more about your adorable puppies. Have fun with them!
P.S. That picture of Defer by himself is absolutely adorable. He looks very mischievous...

Really cute dogs you got there. And I'm sure you will be able to train them. But as for the husband, I'm not that sure. :)
